Girls Trip gets an F for extremely foul

Movie Title:
 Girls Trip

Grade:  F for FOUL

Rating: R, 122 minutes

In a Nutshell:  I guess I just don’t get this movie.  In fact, I hated it. Audiences are loving it, but I thought it was one of the most crude, trashy movies I had ever seen.  I’m honestly surprised that the talented cast would want to be part of such a disgusting, filthy script.

Uplifting theme:
  • Friendship, forgiveness, loyalty

  • “Realize your own truth.” – Ryan (Regina Hall)
  • Power to rediscover your own voice
  • It’s better to be alone than with someone who disrespects you.

Things I liked:
  • The cast includes Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, and Tiffany Haddish.  I thought Tiffany's character was the most disgusting and disgraceful, so I guess you could say she did a great job.
  • Some music celebrity cameos.  The Essence Music Festival occurs every year in New Orleans.
  • I got a kick out of all of Queen Latifah’s hairstyles.

Things I didn’t like:
  • TONS of nasty, crude jokes, foul behavior, offensive language, and repulsive images.
  • The girls do horribly crude things and have a night of extremely bad behavior and then they kneel down to pray.  So, praying makes all of their bad character, foul language and trashy behavior OK all of a sudden? I believe in repentance, but the very next day they go out and do it all again.
  • The girlfriends scream profanities at each other and are constantly fighting.
  •  Two of the women pee all over everyone from a zip-line above a crowd.  Disgusting.  I’m not talking about a little dribble either.  Think full-on spraying hose.  Gross.  Not funny.
  • Ryan’s husband cheats on her, yet she flirts with someone else and thinks it's OK.
  • The two token white girls were both painted as idiots.
  • Why are so many movies coming out that glorify girls behaving badly?
  • I love a good comedy, but the jokes in this movie were juvenile and disgusting.

Tips for parents:
  • Pure garbage.  If you wanted your kids to watch this movie with a filter, it would be about a 10 minute movie.
  • Extreme profanity and offensive language.  That’s not even including the 429,871 F-bombs.
  • Drugs, alcohol, sex, fighting
  • Full-frontal nudity of an old guy.  Yuck.
  • Dina opens her shirt up at a concert to reveal pasties.
  • Very immodest clothing.

Fist Fight showcases the worst of American high school

Movie Title:    Fist Fight

Grade:  D for don't waste your time on this garbage

Rating: R, 1 hour 31 minutes

In a Nutshell:   #TeacherFight

This filthy movie features about 947,633 moments of profanity, bullying, drug-use, porn, and a huge variety of inappropriate and lewd behavior by high school teens AND adults.

Uplifting theme:
  • “It takes courage to grow up and to become who you really are.”   e.e.cummings
  • “Words are always going to matter.” – English teacher
  • “Actions have consequences.” – Ron Strickland (Ice Cube)
  • As I always tell my 4 sons, “Be. A. Man.”
  • If you don't stand up for yourself, who will?

Things I liked:
  • Andy Campbell is the perfect wuss.
  • Jillian Bell is hilarious, but inappropriate 99% of the time.
  • Christina Hendrick smolders, as always.
  • Occasionally funny pranks.  I was Senior class president of my high school and planned an awesome Senior Prank.  I sent home letters to all the parents of seniors, explaining that the students would have a particular day off school for some legitimate-sounding reason, forging the principal's signature.

Things I didn’t like:
  • There has to be premise for the fight, but Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) throws a temper tantrum in a classroom, destroys school property, and then picks a fight with another teacher.
  • Tracy Morgan always plays the same character in everything.  I walked past him in an airport once and said, "Hey!"  He answered back, "Hey yourself."
  • I hate the expression “Snitches have stitches.”  I’ve heard students say that before.  It encourages the lack of consequences.
  • I hated the talent show where little elementary school student Ally (Alexa Nisenson) drops a million F-bombs.  NOT adorable.
  • I chuckled a few times, but it’s mostly not funny.
  • Ice Cube was good, but he pretty much plays the same character in everything he does too: tough, scary guy matched up with a weasely light-weight who plays the comic relief.

Funny lines:
  • “No meth period.” – Andy
“When I’m on my period, don’t do it?  That’s when I need it the most.” – Holly
“Holly, this has got to stop!” – Andy
“Cuz it’s a gateway?” – Holly
“It’s the finish line!” – Andy
  • “The guy’s a virtuoso.” – janitor
“That doesn’t seem so scary.” – Andy
“You didn’t see his eyes.” – janitor
  • “Where do I get drugs?” – Andy
“You’re in a public high school in the United States of America. There couldn’t be a better place to get drugs.” – Holly
  • “Whoever dies first haunts the school!” – Holly
Tips for parents:
  • This is a true Rated R movie that is not family-friendly viewing.
  • Tons and tons of profanity.
  • Tons of inappropriate images of porn, underage sex talk, and masturbation.
  • It makes American high school look like it’s filled with complete drug & porn addicted delinquents.

Why Him? features comedic talent, a gazillion F-bombs, and tons of crude jokes

Movie Title:    Why Him?

Grade:  D

Rating:  R, 111 minutes

  • In a Nutshell:  This film definitely earns its R rating for every reason.
  •  If you use a language or content filter when you watch this movie on DVD, it will basically be a 5 minute silent movie.  It’s FILLED with trashy, raunchy humor.  There is a LOT of inappropriate behavior, images, and language.

Uplifting theme:
  • “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” – Ned Fleming (Bryan Cranston)
Woah.  Chills.” – Laird Mayhew (James Franco)
  • Give people a chance to be who they are.

Things I liked:
  • The cast includes GREAT comedic talent: James Franco, Bryan Cranston, Megan Mullally, and Keegan-Michael Key.  They all have excellent comedic timing and an even spread of funny lines between them.
  • Awesome toilets!  (Not the potty mouths.)
  • Did you know Kelly Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory: Season 9 was the voice of Justine?
  • I liked that they got real celebrities to play themselves: Elon Musk, Steve Aoki, Richard Blais,  and Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley from KISS!
  • I admit it.  I laughed out loud a few times.
  • There's a reference from the movie The Pink Panther (2006) Did you ever see that movie?  Pretty fun.
  • “Kevin!” (video clip from Home Alone)  I love it when movies reference other movies.

Things I didn’t like:
  • Have you ever known anyone without filters?  Weird, right?.... and yet oddly refreshing.
  • Director John Hamburg recycles a plot that is completely predictable with nothing particularly new to see.
  • There were some other good comedy actors in the movie, but they were only given teeny, tiny parts: Adam DeVine, Andrew Rannells, Cedric the Entertainer, and Casey Wilson.
  • They started to create a character who worked for Laird and did degrading jobs while he uttered “Pay my student loans, pay my student loans”, but then they didn’t keep the gag going very long.
  • It always bugs me when they make child actors say and do crude things.
  • There were scenes advertised in the trailer that never made it into the actual movie.

Funny lines:
  • “I feel like I’m so normal.” – Laird
  • “Scotty, shut it and eat your paper.” – Ned
  • You think you’re at war with Laird, but he’s not fighting.  It’s just you.” – Barb Fleming
  • “I’m going straight to hell just for typing this.” – Ned
  • “I’m down to my last 97 million…197 million.” – Laird
“Barely scraping by.” - Barb

Tips for parents:

  • This is a Rated R movie for a reason.  It’s an even trashier version of Meet the Parents .  You really do NOT want your kids to watch this garbage.
  • The language is really, really bad.  There is barely a sentence without profanity. Gustav explains, “He speaks English and you speak English with resounding amounts of F***!”  There are about a million F-bombs.
  • You see James Franco's rear end.
  • You see Bryan Cranston sitting on the toilet.  Of course, that's nothing new if you ever watched Malcolm In the Middle (loved it!) or Breaking Bad: The Complete Series   I don't know what it is about Bryan Cranston, but he loves to be seen in his underwear.

Vid Angel lets you watch movies the way you want your family to see them

As you know, I LOVE movies.  I love watching them and talking about them!

Over the years, I've tried many different services from companies that offer the ability to bleep out the profanity, violence or sex from scenes you don't want your children to see.  I've never been very impressed with any of them...until NOW!

I recently discovered Vid Angel.   They have found a great way to help you get rid of the junk you don't want to watch, while keeping the stuff you do.

Here's one of their cute advertisements:

Better as a drive-thru than a Ride Along

Movie Title:  Ride Along
PG-13, 1 hour 40 minutes

Grade: C

In a Nutshell:  Ride Along should really just be a drive-thru, maybe later, after it’s out on DVD or in the dollar bin at Wal-Mart.  One F-bomb short of an R-rated movie, this buddy cop clichéd flick is filled with profanity, racial slurs and police brutality jokes.  It relies on the physical humor that Kevin Hart provides as he screams in a panic during the entire film.  The plot is canned, as are the jokes.  It’s 100 minutes of exaggerated silliness, so if that’s what you’re in the mood for don’t be disappointed with the thin plot and stereotyped characters.

Uplifting theme:  Santiago (played by the talented John Leguizamo) says to James (played by straight-faced Ice Cube) “It must be tough being an island, huh?  Nobody to watch your back?” Some of the biggest themes of the movie are that we all need each other and to believe in your dreams.  Oh yeah, and playing video games gives you handy skills because, as Omar says "Everybody wants to be on the winning side."

Things I liked:  Kevin Hart is adorable and it’s inspiring to see his character never give up on his dream.

Things I didn’t like: I thought it was ridiculous that while Ben (Kevin Hart) was out trying to survive various antics, his girlfriend (Tika Sumpter) sat around the house scantily clad, anxiously waiting for him to return so they could…

Funny lines:
* “I’m not about to buy that girl with a goat.”   - Ben
* “How tall is Omar now?” – Ben
* The audience howled with laughter when Ben smacks James (several times)
* "Respect is best served cold."  - Ben  Omar corrects him: "No, it's revenge that's best served cold."

Things to look for:  Sophisticated humor…Nope, you won’t find it here, folks.

Tips for parents: This is not exactly a family-friendly movie and not appropriate for little ones…or older ones.  Lots and lots of profanity, including a scene where a young kid has a terrible potty-mouth.  There is a strip club scene and lots of sexual jokes, as well as disrespect for the popo…oh, I mean the police.
