Phantom Thread isn't the movie you think it's going to be

Movie Title:      Phantom Thread

Grade:  A-

Rating: R, 130 minutes

In a Nutshell:  With gorgeous shots and images, this stylish film by Focus Features showcases glamour, fashion, romance, and a fantastic Daniel Day-Lewis.

On June 20, 2017, Daniel Day-Lewis said that this is his last film, which would be a terrible loss to all of us.  He’s absolutely fantastic.  As an added bonus, both Vicky Krieps and Lesley Manville are equal to his performance.

As of today, this interesting film has been nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including “Best Picture.”  It has already won the National Board of Review" award for best original screenplay.

Tips for parents:
  • Alma wears some sheer fabric that reveals her chest.
  • Quite a few F-bombs, but no other profanity.
  • Most children and teens will be bored out of their minds.
  • Pre-marital relations

Uplifting theme:
  • “It’s comforting to think the dead are watching over the living.  I don’t find that spooky at all.” -  Reynolds (Daniel Day-Lewis)
  • The give and take required in a relationship.
  • We are most tender and vulnerable when we're sick.  In fact, director Paul Thomas Anderson got the idea for this film when he was sick in bed. His wife, comedienne Maya Rudolph, was taking care of him and he realized she hadn't looked at him with such love in a long time.

Things I liked:
  • The musical score was noticeably beautiful.  Johnny Greenwood’s work really enhances the movie.
  • Incredible attention to detail.
  • It’s very subtle.
  • You think the movie is going in one direction, but then it surprisingly changes with one major choice by a character.
  • There are several interesting scenes where Woodcock illustrates that the dresses are not simply garments, but a lifestyle and that the wearer must earn the privilege of being seen in them.
  • It’s fascinating to watch how Reynolds’ sister and Alma handle his eccentricities in two entirely different ways.
  • The title refers to several things in the film.  There is a “phantom” in Reynolds' life who serves as one of his muses.  Reynolds sews secret messages and items into the clothing.  And finally, the seamstresses who work for him all day and night get no glory, although they do most of the actual work.
  • Critics have mixed feelings about director Paul Thomas Anderson, but they all generally agree that he did a great job on this film, creating a meticulous movie with a surprising twist.
  • The dresses are beautiful.  Supposedly, Reynolds' character was inspired by fashion designer Balenciaga.
  • Daniel Day-Lewis was the one who suggested his character's name.  It made director Paul Thomas Anderson laugh so hard that he used it.  Together, they wrote the script.

Things I didn’t like:
  • It’s slow moving.
  • It leaves you with an odd taste in your mouth…so to speak.

Interesting lines:
  • Whatever you do, do it carefully.” – Alma (Vicky Krieps)
  • “There is an air of quiet death about this house and I do not like the way it smells.” – Mr. Woodcock
  • "The tea is going out.  The interruption is staying right here with me." - Mr. Woodcock

Zoolander 2 has more cameos than humor

Movie Title:      Zoolander No.2

Grade:   C+

Rating:   PG-13, 1 hour 40 minutes

In a Nutshell:    Blue steel is back!  If you loved the first Zoolander movie, like I did, you’ll generally get a kick out of this sequel.  If you didn’t enjoy it, then you’ll want to pass on this one, because it’s more of the same goofy nonsense.

Filled with TONS of celebrity cameos and a very thin plot, this ridiculous satire of the fashion industry and pop culture features Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Penelope Cruz, Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen.

Uplifting theme:
  • “How can you expect to love 11 people when you don’t even love yourself?” – Kiefer Sutherland (playing himself)
  • What’s inside you is more important than what’s outside.
  • Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Things I liked:
  • The film includes special appearances of some of the icons in the fashion industry: Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, Valentino, Alexander Wang, Anna Wintour, and Mark Jacobs.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch!
  • You get a little history lesson in the beginning to fill you in on what has happened since the first Zoolander movie came out.  Has it really been 15 years?
  • Other celebrity cameos include: Billy Zane, Ariana Grande, Kiefer Sutherland, Willie Nelson, Katie Perry, Sting, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Susan Boyle, Madonna, Usher, Lenny Kravitz, John Malkovich, M.C. Hammer, Olivia Munn, and many more.  Susan Sarandon appears and quotes a line she said in the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show .
  • #oops!
  • Penelope Cruz works for Interpol in the Fashion Division.  Ha ha
  • There isn’t a surprise at the end of the credits, but you can watch Mugatu dance as they roll.
  • I liked what they did with Fred Armisen’s character.
  • The beginning of the movie with Justin Bieber was pretty funny.
  • A lot of the movie is filmed in Rome!  I love Rome!  Here are some pictures I took there during my last visit there a couple of years ago.

Things I didn’t like:
  • Kristen Wiig’s character is so repulsive and hard to understand that there is very little humor on the screen when she appears.  I do, however, think it’s funny that she “floats”, rather than walks.
  • Some of the fashion gags get a little tired.
  • I actually laughed out loud several times, but most of the humor is really, really, ridiculously stupid and you can see them coming a mile away.
  • For a movie to have a sequel, it has to have a good reason to exist.  Other than a money grab, there just isn't much there.  Huge Zoolander fans will probably be disappointed by that.

Funny lines:
  • “I miss not knowing things with you.” – Derek
  •  “Prison changed me.  I’m bad to the core now!” - Mugatu
  • “Don’t drink the water or you’ll die.” – VIP
  • Farm-to-table Wi-Fi….ha ha
  • “All is all just married hermself.  Mono-marriage is legal in Rome now.” – VIP
  • “We were a joke out there…a total laughing stick.” – Derek
  • “Please accept my apologies, Derek.” – Valentina Valencia
“None taken.” – Derek
  • “You’re the most narcissistic person I’ve ever met.” – Derek Junior
“But that’s not how I see myself.” – Derek
  • “I’m not fat.” – Derek Junior
“He’s Plus Size!” - Derek

Tips for parents:

  • 1 F-bomb, although you get to hear Justin Bieber say “Oh fudge!”  Penelope Cruz swears in Spanish.
  • Like the orgy scene in the first Zoolander movie, there is another one with Hansel.
  • Penelope Cruz is practically falling out of her bathing suit and blouses in every scene.  Zoolander grabs her chest in one scene and has an “aroused” profile in another.
  • Mugatu and Todd have another odd sexual facial exchange like in the first film.
  • Most of the characters are extremely shallow.  Talk to your kids about self-esteem and the importance of not judging people by their appearance alone.

The Intern is sweet, but safe

Movie:    The Intern

Rating:  PG-13, 2 hours 1 minute

Grade:   B

In a Nutshell:   Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway are some of my faves .  Other faces you’ll enjoy seeing are the beautiful Rene Russo, Adam DeVine, and Andrew Rannells.

While the premise of this comedy is very sweet with great comic potential, the writing doesn’t reach very far. It’s pleasant, but bland; sweet, but forgettable.  Director Nancy Meyers charms, yet plays it safe.

Uplifting Theme:
·         Everyone wants to feel wanted, needed, and relevant.
·         “You’re never wrong to do the right thing.” – Mark Twain
·         Men, always carry a handkerchief.   You’ll look classy and be a hero to someone someday.

Things I liked:
·         I loved Ben Whitaker’s (Robert De Niro) video application and the fact that he admitted that he had to call his 6 year old grandson to find out what a USB port was.  Ha ha
·         I liked the way Jules’ (Anne Hathaway) office worked.  For example, the receptionist was really personable and friendly.  I like the idea of ringing a bell and offering applause whenever someone in the office does something well.
·         Anne Hathway has such a beautiful smile.
·         Rene Russo is aging so beautifully.  I take that back….she’s not aging at all.
·         I loved how Ben saw a problem and fixed it without fanfare (when he cleans up the giant mess on the company junk desk).  Years ago I worked for a Congressman in Washington DC, hoping to make big contributions in American politics. One day, I cleaned the office kitchenette, because, frankly, it was disgusting and no one else was doing it.  While I had wanted to save the world, the thing that everyone praised me the most for was being the one who actually took the time to clean the messy kitchen area.  Ha ha   If you want to stand out, do something that others aren’t willing to do.
·         Overall, it’s a clean date movie, which is refreshing in the wake of trashy movies like Trainwreck
-    If you enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada , Anne Hathaway's character in this movie will feel familiar, as if Andy grew up and started her own fashion business.

Things I didn’t like:
·         It’s pretty predictable.  No big plot twists or surprises.
·         Robert De Niro’s character is a little one-dimensional, with a goofy grin on his face most of the time.
-    A few amusing scenarios, but nothing laugh-out-loud funny.
·         The movie preaches about having it all.  Can you really have it all?  Years ago I attended the Governor’sConference for Women in California (fantastic event) and that very question was asked of several high-powered women on a panel.  They all chimed in about how you CAN, until finally, Meg Whitman (CEO of Ebay) honestly said it wasn’t true.  She explained that you can’t have it all….at the same time.  For example, one day you can be the best business woman in the world, but then the house work is going to slide or else you’re too exhausted at the end of the day to carry on a meaningful conversation with your spouse.  Another day you can be Super Mom, but then you won’t have time to exercise or pay your bills.  Ultimately, there are only so many hours in a day and something usually has to give.  I appreciated the honesty of that answer and it has always helped me to set more realistic expectations about my day.

Funny lines:
·         “What did you major in?  Do you remember?”  - ATF Interviewer #1 (Wallis Currie-Wood)
·         “Grey is the new green.” – Jason (funny man Adam DeVine from Pitch Perfect )

Things to look for:
·         In the beginning of the movie when Jules rides her bicycle through the office, they had to have her ride extra slowly so the two girls could get all of their lines out during the scene.
·         Ben’s closet is pretty awesome.
·         Here is a question for you:  If you knew someone was having an affair, would you tell the spouse?  Is it your place to?  Would it help them or hurt them?

Tips for Parents:
·         Jason hands Ben a newspaper to cover up his private parts when he’s getting a massage.
·         Two F-bombs, but they’re both mouthed and so you can’t hear it.  Someone flips the bird.
·         Jules and Ben watch the movie An American in Paris , which your kids probably haven’t seen.  It’s a classic you should introduce to them!  (On second thought, was it a clip from Singin' in the Rain ?)
·         Pre-marital relations.

Another cute intern movie featuring "older" interns is The Internship .
