Sing has lots of toe-tapping heart and humor

Movie Title:   Sing

Grade:  A

Rating:  PG, 108 minutes

In a Nutshell:   All creatures great and small will really enjoy this delightful musical journey brought to us by the clever creators of Minions and Despicable Me.

The music is fun and uplifting, the animation is imaginative and ADORABLE, and the story is heartwarming and inspiring.

Uplifting theme:
  • “Dream big dreams!” – Mr. Moon (Matthew McConaughey)
  • “Don’t let fear stop you from doing the thing you love.” – Mr. Moon
  • “Do what you love to do, then you won’t be afraid, because you’re doing it!” Mr. Moon
  • “You know, the one thing that’s good about hitting rock bottom?  The only way is up.” – Mr. Moon

Things I liked:
  • There is a lot of good, toe-tapping music that can’t help but make you leave the theater in a good mood, 65 hit songs to be exact.  There’s a nice variety of styles of music too.
  • There are so many entertaining animals to see in every frame.
  • The main characters are voiced by extremely talented A-List actors, such as Academy Award winners Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, and Seth MacFarlane.
  • All of the actors do their own singing!  Tori Kelly, Taron Egerton, and
  • Each of the characters struggle in his/her own way, adding several layers to the story.
  • The scene where Mr. Moon is at the carwash is HILARIOUS and absolutely adorable.  It’s a scene that will stick with you for a long time.  The audience was howling with laughter.
  • You can smell the ending a mile away, but there are a few twists and turns that keep the characters in peril and the audience engaged.
  • The talented cast who voiced the characters is an impressive list that includes some names you haven’t seen in some time or ever in animated films, including Laraine Newman, Rhea Perlman, Jennifer Saunders, Nick Offerman, Leslie Jones, and John C. Reilly.

Things I didn’t like:
  • There is some really bad behavior from a lot of the characters: Johnny’s dad robs banks; Mike the mouse is a deceitful, cranky bully and con man; Mr. Moon is dishonest and steals things; Eddie is spoiled and lazy.

Funny lines:
  • “Stand back…moody teenager in the way.” – Mike (Seth MacFarlane)
  • “You can’t just sing; you have to show the fire and desire!” – Gunter (Nick Kroll)

Interesting lines:
  • “Wonder and magic don’t come easy.” – Mr. Moon

Tips for parents:

  • It’s a kid’s movie, so yes…there is farting.
  • No profanity.
  • There are criminal acts by several of the characters.

The Jungle Book takes CGI to a new level

Movie Title:      The Jungle Book

Grade:   A

Rating:   PG, 1 hour 51 minutes

In a Nutshell:    What do you get when you mix 90% CGI with a Rudyard Kipling remake?  Surprisingly, a beautiful family friendly film.

Director Jon Favreau gives a respectful nod to the 1967 Disney original, while crafting a new one that is fresh and full of heart.  See it in 3D if you can.

Uplifting theme:
  •  Baloo says, “Everyone’s got a song.” A strong message that comes out in the film is to be yourself, your best self.  We all have our unique strengths and others around us will be blessed when we are true to ourselves and use our talents.
  • Another wise thing Baloo says is, “You say you want to go the man village.  I say you can be a man right here.”  We need to stop waiting for something to happen before we live up to our potential.
  • Friendship, courage, love.

Things I liked:
  • Neel Sethi plays Mowgli, the only human in the movie, yet there is great humanity in the film.  He does an excellent job and is completely adorable.  I love the realistic detail of some scars on his shoulder and chest.
  • Even if we don’t get to see the talented Ben Kingsley, it’s a pleasure to hear his voice as the protective teacher Bagheera.
  • Who doesn’t love the carefree Baloo?  Bill Murray’s voice fits perfectly and provides plenty of comic relief, making the audience I sat with laugh almost every time the lovable bear was on the screen.  This ain’t no bear from The Revenant!
  • Casting Christopher Walken as the creepy, funny King Louie was perfect. Walken has that reputation in Hollywood.
  • Idris Elba voices the scary Shere Khan and provides a villain who is frightening, yet not so much that young children won’t be able to watch the movie.
  • Scarlett Johansson’s soothing, tempting voice was also a great choice for Kaa.
  • The wolf oath has been borrowed by the Boy Scouts of America, because it teaches some important principles still today!  The 8 year old boys in Cub Scouts repeat a somewhat different version each week in their gatherings.
  • Adorable, yet realistic creatures in the jungle.  The porcupine was an especially popular character for the audience.
  • Pay close attention to this fascinating detail…there is a water scene where you actually see water splashes on the camera…but is there really a camera there or was it all CGI?
  • Honey IS actually good for scratches and bee stings!

Things I didn’t like:
  • There is nothing at the end of credits, so feel free to leave the theater after the last scene.  I was disappointed, because they could have easily added any number of fun nuggets to surprise and delight audiences.
  • Some of the CGI looks a little fake, but most of it is actually stunning.

Funny lines:
  •  “Bears don’t hibernate in the jungle.” – Bagheera
“Not full hibernation, but I nap…a lot.” – Baloo

  • I realize you weren’t born a wolf, but couldn’t you just act like one?” - Bagheera
  • “If you can’t learn to run with the pack, one of these days, you’ll be someone’s dinner.” – Bagheera
  • “He’s walking on two legs!” – animal child at Peace Rock
“Don’t stare!” – animal’s shocked mother
  • “What did I tell you?  He’s special.” – Baloo talking about Mowgli
“I know.  I raised him.” - Bagheera

Interesting lines:
  • “If it’s meant to be, it will be.” – Raksha (Lupita Nyong’o)
  • “You have never been a more endangered species than you are in this moment.” - Baloo
Tips for parents:

  • There are some animal fight scenes that might frighten very young children.
  • Shere Khan has a scarred eye that makes him look scary.
  • No profanity.

Hail Caesar! pokes good fun at old Hollywood

Movie Title:       Hail, Caesar!

Grade:   B+

Rating:   PG-13, 1 hour 45 minutes

In a Nutshell:    Four-time Oscar winning brothers Joel and Ethan Coen have created an extremely entertaining  comedy that pokes fun at Hollywood’s Golden Age, featuring a gigantic cast of today’s A-listers, including George Clooney, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Ralph Fiennes, Josh Brolin, Jonah Hill, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and so many more.

Uplifting theme:
  • “People don’t want the facts.  They want to believe.” – Eddie Mannix
  • “God wants us to do what’s right.  The inner voice that tells us what’s right comes from God.” – priest in confessional

Things I liked:
  • I liked the way the narrator told the story about telling stories.  The Lockheed recruiter tells Eddie Mannix, “The picture business is pretty silly” and yet we still love movies. They move us, inspire us, make us laugh, make us cry, make us feel!
  • The film is filled with super funny sound effects, including a bird sound every time someone said the line “On wings of eagles.”  It reminded me of the running gag on “Young Frankenstein”.   A lot of the humor reminded me of the old Mel Brooks comedies.
  • Funny cowboy stunt scene.  Alden Ehrenreich does a great job as Hobie Doyle.
  • There’s a great dance scene with Channing Tatum in the “Swingin’ Dinghy” bar that will remind you of the fun singing and dancing films featuring legendary Gene Kelly.
  • There is an amusing scene where Ralph Fiennes plays an eloquent director who uses words that simpleton Hobie Doyle (and probably some people in the audience) don’t know.  You’ll be ahead of the game when you already know these words: “mirthless” (without laughter), “rueful” (sorrow, pity) , “trippingly” (light and quick)
  • “Divine presence to be shot.”   Ha ha
  • Wayne knight from Seinfeld: The Complete Series has a bit part.  It was good to see him again, and funny to see him as a movie Extra.
  • I thought it was interesting that the main film they were filming during the movie was the story of Christ from the perspective of a Roman soldier, which is exactly what the movie Risen is about, which is also currently in movie theaters.
  • The talented Tilda Swinton plays twins.  I’m happy to get as many doses of Tilda as we can get.
  • I have always adored Christopher Lambert ever since Mortal Kombat and Highlander: The Movie .  Here he has a tiny part as a German director.  It’s been awhile since I’ve seen him too.  Look close or you’ll miss him.
  • My husband and I watched every episode of Numb3rs: The Complete Series , so it was fun to see David Krumholtz, who plays a Communist writer.  The Communist “club” scenes were funny and filled with familiar faces.
  • Religious characters in movies are usually made fun of, but not in this one. Josh Brolin’s character is sincere, religious, talented, yet flawed in an endearing way.
  • I thought George Clooney’s speech at the cross was both sweet and funny at just the right moment.
  • It looked like they filmed on the actual Universal Studios lot.  I was just there a few months ago!  It’s such a fun theme park.

Things I didn’t like:
  • One shot allows you to see right up George Clooney’s nose, hairs and all.
  • Anyone over 50 should be able to remember some of the original stars and movies that are being alluded to in this film.  Those younger may not appreciate all of the inside jokes.
  • Some gags go on for a little too long.

Funny lines:
  •  “I need some petty cash.  Do you have $100,000?” - Mannix
  • “You worship a God who doesn’t love anyone.” – Protestant Clergyman (Allan Havey)
“Not true.  He loves Jews.” – Rabbi (Robert Picardo)

Interesting lines:
  • “Same thing…history and economics, isn’t it?” – Head Communist Writer (Max Baker)
  • “The picture has worth and you have worth as long as you serve the picture.” – Mannix

Tips for parents:

  • Some “real” profanity, as well as harmless words like “Nuts!”
  • Young kids may not get some of the humor or pop culture references.
  • Some subtle sexual innuendo, but young kids will probably not catch it.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is a fun addition to the Marvel movie franchise

PG-13, 2 hours 21 minutes

Grade:  A-

In a Nutshell:   Bring on the summer popcorn blockbuster movies!  Packed full of action, impressive special effects, cool futuristic  technology that no one really understands, romance, and a powerful villain, this Avengers flick is a nice addition to the Marvel movie franchise. Welcome back to some of our favorite superheroes:
Iron Man – Robert Downey Jr.
Captain America – Chris Evans
Thor - Chris Hemsworth
The Hulk – Mark Ruffalo
Black Widow – Scarlett Johansson
Hawkeye – Jeremy Renner
Nick Fury – Samuel L. Jackson

Uplifting Theme:
·          “Ultron thinks we’re monsters, that we’re what’s wrong with the world.  This isn’t just about beating him.  It’s about whether he’s right.” – Captain America
·         Flesh is better than metal.
·         It doesn’t matter what you were, you can be a hero now.

Things I liked:
·         There are plenty of high octane action scenes, but just enough slower ones to build interesting back stories that enhance the human drama of it all.
·         I love seeing how each of the Marvel movies chooses to use Stan Lee in a cameo.  This one is pretty funny.
·         I love Paul Bettany in anything, even if he’s a red robot (the Vision).
·         I wondered if Iron Man’s “Jarvis is my co-pilot” bumper sticker would catch on and sure enough, you can get it on a T-shirt.

·         I wish I had their 3D computer monitors.
·         You’re probably going to want to watch this on DVD again later so that you can push the pause button and really see everything that’s going on in each frame.
·         Marvel seems to have learned from the highly successful Guardians of the Galaxy movie that a frequent spattering of humor makes a fun flick even better.
·         Semi-SPOILER ALERT: Who knew one of the Avengers had a wife and kids and did odd jobs around the house?
·         Ever wonder what a feature film all about Black Widow would be like?  Check out this funny Saturday Night Live clip:

Fans of Scarlett Johansson will be happy to know that a REAL Black Widow movie IS coming out next year!

Things I didn’t like:
·         I thought it was ironic and funny that Ultron, who was designed to create world peace, has such a menacing voice, thanks to the voice talents of James Spader.
·         It’s annoying how the evil Ultron quotes scripture.
·         If you haven’t seen any of the Avengers movies, don’t start with this one or you’ll be a little lost.  Even more important, you won’t appreciate the greatness of our superpowers, as this film focuses on their character flaws and inner demons.  For a review of the latest Avenger movie, check out my movie review before watching this sequel.

Funny lines:
·         “Unlike you, I don’t have a lot of time for parties…..will Thor be there?” – Dr. Helen Cho (Claudia Kim)
·         “You’re not the director of me.” – Iron Man
·         “You know, I really miss the days when the weirdest thing created by science was me.” – Captain America
·         “Come here to confess your sins? – Ultron
“I don’t know.  How much time you got?” – Iron Man
“More than you.” – Ultron
·         “As the world’s leading author on waiting…don’t.” – Captain America on love
·         “Our job is IF.” – Iron Man
·         “I am Thor, son of Odin.  As long as their life in my breast, I….I’m running out of things to say.” – Thor
·         “At long last is lasting a little long, boys!” – Black Widow
·         “No surrender!  I’m going to surrender…” – Baron Wolfgang von Strucker
·         “He’s fast, she’s weird.” – Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders from the funny hit How I Met Your Mother: Season 5 ) talking about the twins and their special powers
·         “You’re unbearably naiive.” – Ultron
“Well, I was born yesterday.” - Vision

Interesting lines:
·         “Did you know that this church is in the exact center of this city?  The Elders decreed it so that everyone would be equally close to God.  I like that… geometry of belief.”  - Ultron
·         “Everyone creates the thing they dread.  Men of peace create engines of war, invaders create avengers, people create smaller people…uh, children.” - Ultron
·         “You’re not going anywhere!” – Iron Man
“Of course not.  I’m already there.  You’ll catch up.” – Ultron
·         “Every time people try to win a war before it starts, innocent people die.  Every time.” – Captain America

·         Tips for Parents:
Some profanity, but one of the running gags is how Captain America tries to clean up everyone’s language
The body count is high...well if you count humans AND robots.
