The Greatest Showman features joyful dancing and infectious songs

Movie Title:    The Greatest Showman

Grade:  A

Rating:  PG, 105 minutes

In a Nutshell: Critics seem to be ripping this musical movie to shreds, so it makes me wonder if I saw the same film they did!  I really loved it!  In fact, the audience I watched the movie with on opening day applauded and cheered at the end of the movie.  They loved it too!  So do the Golden Globes, having recently nominated it as Best Picture in the Musical/Comedy category.

Directed by Michael Gracey, this movie has been a passionate pet project of Hugh Jackman for quite awhile.  I adore him.  He can do it all: sing, dance, act.  He is a true showman and was also nominated by the Golden Globes for Best Performance by an actor in the same Musical/Comedy category.  I hear he is also a genuinely nice guy.  Don’t tell my husband I’m in love with him. I thought he was absolutely incredible in Les Miserables (2012)

Tips for parents:
  • A father slapped his son on the face so hard that you could hear an audible "OH!!" from parents in the audience.
  • No profanity.
  • There is an element in the movie that teaches there is no right or wrong and that everything is ok.  That may bother some parents who teach their children that there IS a difference between right and wrong in this world.
  • Lots of alcohol and drinking
  • Violent bullying

Uplifting theme:

  • "The noblest art is that of making others happy." - P.T. Barnum
  • Everyone of us is special and no one is like us.  That’s the point of my show.” – P. T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman)
  • “No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.” – P. T. Barnum
  • “We can live in a world we design.”  - song lyric
  • “A man’s station is limited only to his imagination.” – Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson)
  • “Make no apologies.  I am who I’m meant to be.” – song lyric
  • Small-minded people vs. accepting others for who they are
  • “Dream with your eyes wide open.” – song lyric

Things I liked:
  • One critic said the 11 original songs are not even memorable.  I wholeheartedly disagree.  In fact, I'm completely obsessed with the soundtrack and have listened to it at least a dozen times already. The songs were fantastic and I can’t wait to watch the movie again.  This Is Me was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.  Keala Settle sings the triumphant anthem.  I’m so happy for her to make her film debut.  She plays the Beared Woman.  She is new to most of us, although she has been performing on Broadway for 30 years.  I think The Greatest Showman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is going to be very popular.
  • The talented cast includes Zac Efron (He does a fantastic bar scene with Hugh Jackman), Michelle Williams (lovely solo), Rebecca Ferguson (she is truly stunning in this movie), and the popular pre-teen idol Zendaya.
  • The dance numbers were joyful, infectious, and energizing.  Dance tutorials are already popping up on YouTube.
  • Some of the transitions were really clever.
  • While the movie is a period piece, the songs sound more like today’s pop radio hits.  Critics claim that the songs should match the time, but audiences will love the songs because the lyrics are inspiring and the music feels relevant to today.  The  award-winning lyricists from La La Land wrote for this movie.  Critics fell all over themselves for La La Land, but I liked THE GREATEST SHOWMAN more.
  • It felt like a carefully crafted stage production, something that Barnum would have actually created.
  • I thought Rebecca Ferguson was amazing in the movie and looked gorgeous.  Then I learned that her singing voice wasn't hers, but actually Loren Allred's.  The song was beautiful.  It was actually written with Anne Hathaway in mind, but she didn't end up in the movie.

Things I didn’t like:
  • The biggest complaint movie critics have is that the script is weak and clunky.  Again, I disagree.  I loved it all.
  • I would have liked learning more about some of the characters, like the Bearded Lady. It would have been a 3 hour movie to include back stories on some of the circus performers though!
  • There are some basic historic facts that the movie got wrong, but it really didn't bother me.  In reality, P.T. Barnum was not a very nice guy and cared more about money than people.  He didn't have a romantic relationship with Jenny Lind.  She really did leave the tour early, but it was because she had been donating all of her earnings to charity and was getting tired of being on the road for so long.

Interesting lines:
  • “People are fascinated with the exotic and the macabre.  That’s why we stare at it.”  - P.T. Barnum
  • “You don’t need everyone to love you, Phin, just a few good people.” – Charity Barnum (Michelle Williams)
  • “Men suffer from believing too little than too much.” – P. T. Barnum
  • “Comfort is the enemy of progress.” – P.T. Barnum
  • “Nothing draws a crowd quite like a crowd.” - P.T. Barnum
  • “People come to my show for the pleasure of being hoodwinked.  Just once I’d like to give them something real.” – P.T. Barnum
  • “When you’re careless with other people, it will bring ruin on yourself.” – Jenny Lind
  • “I wanted to be more than I was.” – P. T. Barnum

Funny lines:
  • “Don’t turn sensible on us now.” – Beared Lady (Keala Settle)
  • "Real estate in Manhatten is a terrible investment." - P. T. Barnum   haha

Star Wars: The Last Jedi thrills fans and entertains everyone else

Grade:  A

Rating:  PG-13, 152 minutes (That’s a whopping 2 ½ hours!)

In a Nutshell:  YES!  This is the EPIC movie we were hoping for!  I admit it...I almost cried when that famous musical score and crawling script began.

Fans have been waiting with great anticipation for The Last Jedi (Star Wars) I love it when movie-goers dress up in costumes to watch the film in theaters.  It makes it so fun for everyone.  I knew I was in for a great time when the entire audience I watched the movie with erupted in cheers as soon as all of the trailers ended and the words “Lucas Film Ltd” appeared on the screen.  So fun.  Yes, if you’re not a nerdy fan like me, you’ll still be entertained.

As the umpteenth movie in the franchise, you’d think they would start running out of cool ideas, but this movie packs a powerful emotional punch and features new characters and creatures that will leave you wanting even more.

Rian Johnson really adds his unique voice and perspective to the franchise.  There are plenty of thrills, laughs, and twists to add to this canon.  Yeah, I used the word canon….this film franchise is practically scripture.  Ha ha  The movie itself even refers to the Jedi “religion.”  Godspeed Rebels!

Uplifting theme:
  • Hope.
  • “Strength is mastery. Weakness is folly.” – Yoda (Frank Oz)
  • Heroes and leaders
  • Good vs. evil
  • Power, control
  • “The force is energy between all things that creates balance.” – Luke
  • Hubris vs. humility
  • Peace and purpose

Things I liked:
  • Great action sequences.  Really great.  Satisfying lightsaber fight scenes.
  • Lots of humor.  Yay.  I appreciate it when movies don't take themselves so seriously and can poke fun at themselves to play with the audience.
  • Mark Hamilton as Luke Skywalker said he was kind of surprised by the direction and unique vision of the director for his character, but he does a fantastic job, probably his best performance ever.  Just when you’re wondering how Luke Skywalker could have possibly survived on that rugged island, he shows you!  Ha ha
  • Adam Driver gives a compelling performance, as always.  There is an impressively deep level of his performance.
  • Tons of cool surprises!
  • Porgs.  Totally adorable.
  • Several respectful nods to past movies and their content.
  • The scene with the red salt ground was striking.  All of the locations are really stunning and imaginative.
  • I thought it was so sweet and touching at the very end of the movie when the credits were rolling and the screen said “In loving memory of our princess, Carrie Fisher.”   I remember seeing her perform on stage when she was a young teenager.  She sang a song with her talented mother Debbie Reynolds.  My mother was a nightclub singer many years ago.  Too bad I have a terrible singing voice.  It would have been so much fun to sing with her on stage!
  • Daisy Ridley was great, of course.
  • I've always liked Domhnall Gleeson. The banter between him and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) towards the beginning of the movie was hilarious.
  • The wonderful cast includes Andy Serkis, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o, and Laura Dern.

Things I didn’t like:
  • It’s sad to know that Carrie Fisher will not get to enjoy all of the movie release parties and fanfare for this new movie.
  • In the beginning of the movie, it looked like Kylo Ren had stickers on his face or something.  Futuristic bandaids?  I liked it much better when they  showed how his face was (sort of) repaired.

  • Movie critics seem to have mixed feelings about the side story with Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran).  I thought it was fine.
  • Two of my sons said that the more they thought about the movie, the more they decided they didn't like it.  Hmmm...
  • SPOILER: I thought it was interesting that they decided to "save" Princess Leia by having her use special powers of the Force to have her fly Mary Poppins style back into the ship after dying out in space.  Given that Carrie Fisher has died in real life, I wondered why they didn't just end her character as well.  I know, I know...she had to have more scenes for the story.  Still....
  • I have a lot of unanswered questions.

Funny lines:
  • “Read them, you have? Page turners they were not.” – Yoda, talking about the ancient Jedi manuscripts.    (I thought that line was awesome.)
  • “Every word of what you just said was wrong.” – Luke Skywalker

Interesting lines:
  • “I know one truth – it’s time for the Jedi to end.” - Luke
  • “The greatest teacher is failure.” - Yoda

Tips for parents:
  • Children who haven’t seen prior Star Wars films may be confused, but they’ll still be entertained.
  • All of the Rebel leaders are women, including many shots of young, 20-something females flying planes and bombers.  Girls will feel empowered that they can do anything.
  • A LOT of destruction, shooting, and high (yet bloodless) body count.
  • Shirtless Adam Driver in a scene.
  • Some profanity.
  • Snoke is pretty scary looking.  Of course he's played by the amazing Andy Serkis who also brought us Gollum the Lord Of The Rings 1/4 scale figure.

Is the movie Ferdinand appropriate for kids?

Movie Title:    Ferdinand

Grade:   B

Rating: PG, 1 hour 46 minutes

In a Nutshell: I lived in Spain for a couple of years in my 20's, so I was curious to see Blue Sky Studio and 20th Century Fox would represent that beautiful country I fell in love with.  I especially wanted to see how they would make what is normally a very brutal “sport” into a kid-friendly movie!

I attended one bull fight in Spain.  Once was enough.  The truth is that bulls in the ring die a bloody, violent death.  Does that sound like a kid movie to you?

Honestly, I couldn't decide how I felt about this movie.  The animation is colorful and sweet, but the backdrop for the entire story seems almost inappropriate for kids.

Uplifting theme:
  • We all have different dreams.  Live yours.
  • Control your fears.
  • Flowers make the world a better place!
  • Hate vs. love.
  • Pets are family.

Things I liked:
  • Beautiful animation scenery and landscapes.  Detailed animation brings richness to straw, dirt, water, chipped paint, and moisture on the bulls’ nostrils.
  • Based on The Story of Ferdinand , the original Disney short was first shown in 1938 and even won an Academy Award for Best Short!
  • I thought it was funny when Ferdinand accidentally breathed in a caterpillar and then snorted out a fully-grown butterfly.  Ha ha
  • The film introduces kids to a few Spanish traditions which make the country unique and magical, such as flamenco dance, the flower festival (Feria de las flores), and white-washed streets lined with baskets of flowers.  I liked it when they showed the old-fashioned, classic windmills of Spain and then the modernized windmills to contrast the rich tradition with the new Spain.  It doesn't quite do for Spain what the movie Coco does for Mexico, but it was a nice start.
  • Bull in a china shop.  It had to be done.
  • John Cena does a great job as the voice of Ferdinand.
  • The dance battle scene was pretty cute.
  • I never knew there was such a thing as a “calming goat” used around bulls.  Kate McKinnon is a fantastic comedic actress, really bringing life to Lupe, the goofy goat.
  • The Austrian horses may seem out of place in the movie, but the Lipizzaner show horses are actually really famous in Spain.
  • Segways.  Man, I love those.  So much fun.
  • It’s amazing that they could build an entire feature film around a very short story.
  • Nick Jonas' song Home has been nominated for a Golden Globe. The Ferdinand (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is sweet enough.

Things I didn’t like:
  • It’s not super funny with lots of quick laughs.  The audience I watched the movie with was pretty quiet and didn’t react much to what was happening on the screen.
  • Some Spanish is spoken without subtitles, but nothing important is said that would make those lines crucial to the story.  They’re just added in to enhance the flavor of Spain.  The names of some of the characters are words in Spanish:  Guapo (Handsome) and Valiente (Brave).
  •  The chase scene went from entertaining to completely ridiculous in about 2 seconds.
  • Some movie critics complain that there are too many characters in this movie, but I didn’t mind.
  • Three great actors voiced the hedgehogs, yet I didn't even notice: Gina Rodriguez (I love her in Jane the VIRGIN), Gabriel Iglesias, and Daveed Diggs.  They don't get that many lines, and you pay more attention to their antics than to their voices.

Funny lines:
  • “I’ve fallen and I can’t giddy-up!” – Austrian horse
  • “I’m Una!  I’m Dos!  I’m Cuatro!” – Hedgehogs
“What happened to Tres?” – Ferdinand
“We do not speak of Tres.” - Hedgehogs

Interesting lines:
  • “Why does not wanting to fight mean I’m scared?” – Ferdinand   (Great question!  It often takes greater courage NOT to fight!)
  • “If we don’t look out for each other, who will?” – Ferdinand

Tips for parents:
  • If your kids are sensitive to the horrors of killing animals for sport, this is not the movie for them.  There is also a disgusting “chop house” scene that might turn your kids into vegans.
  • It’s a fairly long animation, and I noticed some of the younger children in the audience I sat with getting bored and fidgety.
  • There is a scene where some characters sing and dance the “Macarena.”  Wow, young kids are definitely not going to know what that dance craze was.  That was a LONG time ago!
  • Your kids are probably going to want a pet hedgehog now.  They may be shocked to learn that the adorable, little creatures don’t come in pink and blue.
  • There is sort of a gay undertone in that bulls are supposed to be manly and macho, yet Ferdinand just wants to play with flowers.  In a trailer interview with wrestler-turned-actor John Cena, he explains that he can relate to Ferdinand and being judged, saying, “Don’t judge a bull by its cover.”  Always a good lesson for your kids to learn.

MeshugaNutcracker just might be your new holiday tradition

Movie Title:  MeshugaNutcracker

Grade:   A

Rating: G, 2 hours 11 minutes (including an entertaining 15 minute intermission).

In a Nutshell: Fathom Events brings stage productions and other special events to theaters across the country for limited release.

For the month of December, it’s showcasing MeshugaNutcracker, a creative mix of Chanukah stories and songs set to the music of Tchaikovsky's beloved Nutcracker ballet.  Sounds pretty crazy, right?  "Meshugana" means crazy!

I need to disclose that this movie was co-created and directed by an old friend of mine from high school, Stephen Guggenheim!  We sang in choirs and performed in school productions together, but he was always the one with true talent. I’m so excited for him and proud of him! He co-created the production, directed the film, did all of the vocal arrangements, and stars as the Mayor of Chelm.  Talented indeed.

This is a film version of a stage production that was first workshopped in 2003, which has been performed every year since.  The moving stories illustrate Jewish strength, tradition, and faith.  Just so you know, no actors were harmed in the reenactment of the Maccabean revolt.  (wink)

Uplifting theme:
  • Heroism
  • Jewish tradition and values
  • “Light can always overcome the darkness.” – Jacob (Jackson Davis)
  • “Light is everything.  Together, our lights can shine more brightly.” – little girl (Shannon Guggenheim)
  • We witness miracles every day and sometimes take them for granted.
  • Hope

Things I liked:
  • Cute introduction by Kevin Weisman in the film version of the stage production.
  • Get that phlem going as you learn about the foolish people of Chelm, a mythical town in Poland of Jewish folklore.
  • Eight actors perform 20 original songs. You’ll also hear Handel’s famous “Messiah” being sung with new lyrics about dreidels.  It is also the number eight that represents the number of times the funny cast yells, “Oy!”  ha ha
  • The costumes are clever and colorful, incorporating symbols that represent various traits of the characters, such as corn fields, scrolls of the Torah, a Kiddush cup, and the Jerusalem skyline.
  • Continue watching during the final credits in the end for more clever jokes, video clips of the cast, and upcoming features that are coming soon to the Theater of Chelm.
  • Christians will be able to learn about Jewish customs and stories appreciate the rich religious and culture celebrated this time of year.
  • You’ll want to stay seated during the intermission just to enjoy the entertaining lessons and quizzes on Yiddish sayings, Jewish traditions, and items for discussion.
  • Cute, whimsical set.
  • Talented cast!

Things I didn’t like:
  • I love that each time the cast performs live, they invite a celebrity to surprise the audience in the end.  This movie version of the show features Bruce Vilanch, who was an embarrassing disappointment, bumbling his way through his parts.  Granted, he was only given minutes to prepare, and I’m sure not many of us could do any better under those circumstances.  On another note, I loved his “Jewbacca” t-shirt.
  • After the intermission, you get a quick glance of the surprisingly small audience that watched the production while it was being filmed.  I’m so glad that it is now being seen in movie theaters across the country through Fathom Events so that more people can enjoy it.

Tips for parents:
  • Challenge your children to find the hidden gold coin on each of the characters’ costumes.
  • The second act may prove too long for children, who might get antsy.
  • Safe entertainment for all ages.
  • Christian children will probably be unfamiliar with the Jewish stories and history lessons, so it's a great opportunity to expose them to this faithful nation.

Saudi Arabia allows movie theaters again

MOVIE NEWS:

Saudi Arabia just announced that it will allow movie theaters to open in the conservative kingdom next year, for the first time in more than 35 years, in the latest social push by the country’s young crown prince.

It’s a stark reversal in a county where movie theaters were shut down in the 1980′s during a wave of ultra-conservatism in the country. Many of Saudi Arabia’s clerics view Western movies and even Arabic films made in Egypt and Lebanon as sinful. I have to admit, a lot of movies in American theaters include terrible profanity, bloody violence, graphic sex scenes, and terrible behavior.  BUT, not all movies are like that.

Despite decades of ultraconservative dogma, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has sought to ram through a number of major social reforms with support from his father, King Salman.
